Portage, MI, August 5, 2019 – Yankee Air Museum’s C-47 “Hairless Joe,” formerly known as “Yankee Doodle Dandy” will be operating and offering Air Adventure Rides at the Air Zoo’s Flight Discovery Center on Milham Rd. for one day only! “Hairless Joe” and crew plan to arrive on Saturday morning at 9am.
Based at historic Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, Michigan this plane pays homage to the heroic crews operating in the China-Burma-India (CBI) theater of World War Two and especially the 1st Air Commando Group. Among the most prolific operations the 1st Air Commando Group performed was that of flying missions over the Himalayas, commonly called the “Hump.” The Burma road was the major supply route into China but when the Japanese cut off the road the only way to get the vital supplies into China was over the Hump. The Air Commandos began their operations with 13 C-47’s and 100 CG-4A Waco Gliders for transport operations. The venerable C-47 Skytrain stood out as the workhorse of the CBI.
C-47 flights will give riders an exciting sightseeing experience over some of Kalamazoo’s most interesting and familiar areas. After boarding, taxiing and leveling off at a comfortable 1200’ altitude, the C-47 riders will be able to move about the cabin, visit the cockpit and enjoy all the views. According to General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the C-47 Skytrain was one of the most vital pieces of equipment used in World War Two. Skytrains moved personnel and cargo, towed troop-carrying gliders, evacuated the wounded and dropped paratroopers behind enemy lines.
