Top Tips for Great Summer Skin

  1. PROTECT YOUR SKIN, SPF IS A MUST! Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin from the dangers of sun exposure. Sunburns and sun damage most commonly come to mind when thinking of sun protection, however basking in the sun without the proper physical sunscreen puts you at higher risk of developing melanoma. Physical sunscreens are “reflectors.” Their active ingredients include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which act as physical blockers. These minerals form a protective barrier on the skin and reflect harmful UV rays before they make contact with the skin’s surface.
  2. HYDRATE – H2O IS YOUR BEST FRIEND! Water is one of the basic needs for human life and with increased summer temperatures and outdoor activities comes increased water loss—through sweating and evaporation—as your body works to stay cool. Staying well hydrated can help maintain your skin’s elasticity and combat the appearance of wrinkles.
  3. PROTECT YOUR LIPS Proper hydration also helps to facilitate protection on your lips against UV rays. The application of a lip balm with SPF is necessary all summer long! We recommend Rosehip & Lemongrass Lip Balm from Eminence Organics. A natural SPF15 defends dry lips against harmful UV exposure, while soothing rosehip oil relieves dryness and rejuvenating lavender restores softness.
  4. HYDRATE YOUR SKIN WITH A LOTION Skipping a body lotion or facial moisturizer in the summer will break down healthy skin barrier over time. Use a lightweight lotion on your body to hydrate in the summer months. One of our favorite ingredients is Stone Crop: hydrating for uneven skin tones; helps to reduce the appearance of age spots and skin blotches.
  5. EXFOLIATE Exfoliating is essential for removing dead skin cells, encouraging cellular turn over and revealing a bright and smooth complexion. Sugar scrubs, salt scrubs and dry brushing are all great options all summer long!
  6. TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET Exfoliating isn’t just great for our skin, our feet need regular exfoliating as well, to ensure cellular turnover and oxygenation. We recommend regular pedicures and keeping a pumice stone in the shower for quick access to exfoliation.
  7. CLEANSE You must cleanse your skin! Even if you don’t wear makeup or you feel like it’s clean enough, cleansing your skin is key to preventing breakouts and avoiding a build up of sweat, dirt and debris. We recommend a gentle cleanser, twice daily. Some of our favorites are Stone Crop Gel Wash, Monoi Age Corrective Exfoliating Cleanser and the Wild Flower Cleansing Balm from Eminence Organic Skin Care.
  8. MINIMAL MAKEUP The summer time is the perfect time to “let your skin breathe” and ditch the makeup or switch to a light mineral makeup. Of course, we want to wear an SPF during the summer months however with increased temperatures our skin is prone to more oil. Keeping it clear of bulky products will ensure a smooth and glowing complexion!
  9. HEALTHY FOOD Strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers and watermelon are all staples at the meal table in the summer time and luckily, have amazing benefits for our skin! Lycopene—the compound that gives tomatoes and watermelon their red hue— helps protect skin against sun exposure. Watermelon is super hydrating and cucumbers nourish skin by delivering a lot of water, as well as some vitamin C and caffeic acid—two compounds that may help protect against skin-damaging UV rays. Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps your body make collagen, which helps skin stay plump & wrinkle-free, and it can also help prevent & heal UV-related skin damage.
  10. GET A FACIAL! Facials are the key ingredient for healthy skin and a glowing complexion. Aside from promoting relaxation and self-care, facials include noticeable improvements to your skin tone, texture and appearance. During the summer, exfoliating and hydration after sun exposure go a long way in maintaining skin health.
