Stay & Play Discover South Haven

Living in Southwest Michigan comes with many perks, one of the best being the beautiful Lake Michigan beaches. There is really nothing better than soaking up the summer sunshine on the lakeshore & one of the best places to do that is in beautiful South Haven.

When writing these features, I typically reach out to readers and ask “what is your favorite thing to do in whatever town I am researching.” The number one response (by far) when I ask this question about South Haven was SHERMAN’S DAIRY BAR. Located at 1601 Phoenix Street, Sherman’s serves some of the most decedent ice cream treats in Michigan. Make sure and try the Pig’s Dinner or a double cone with blueberry and lemon custard.

South Haven offers visitors four beautiful, sandy beaches full of fun and activities. Pack your beach bag for a day of fun in the sun and enjoy volleyball, swimming, sunning, kite boarding and more. NORTH BEACH, SOUTH BEACH, VAN BUREN STATE BEACH & DUNES and PACKARD PARK are waiting to welcome you with white sand beaches and refreshing Lake Michigan water.

If you are looking for the perfect spot to enjoy summer with your pup, look no further than South Haven. DEERLICK CREEK PARK BEACH and VAN BUREN STATE PARK are both pet friendly beaches. After fun in the sun, head into town with your pooch and enjoy one of the many pet friendly stores and restaurants downtown. For a complete list visit: www.southhaven.org/pet-friendly

If the fabulous beaches weren’t enough to entice you to visit South Haven, the outstanding culinary scene should do the trick. No matter what you are craving, South Haven satisfies. Small plates and martinis are the specialties at TASTE. Juicy burgers, flaky perch, cold beer and the best onion rings you’ve ever had await you at CLEMENTINE’S. THE BLACK RIVER TAVERN offers traditional pub food, a full bar and some of the most delicious chicken wings ever. Cruise over to CAPTAIN LOU’S, grab a table outside, sit back, watch the boats go by on the Black River and enjoy one of their famous perch baskets and a signature cocktail (like the North Point Cooler).

One of the biggest events of summer in South Haven is the NATIONAL BLUEBERRY FESTIVAL. Held on the second weekend of August each year, the National Blueberry Festival is one of the country’s oldest fruit festivals. This year’s event kicks off on Thursday, August 8th at 5:00 PM on the Riverfront Main Stage. The Blueberry Pie & Ice Cream Social, Blueberry Festival 5K Run/Walk, Blueberry Bark-B-Que, Bobby Walker Basketball Tournament, Kiwanis Blueberry Pancake Breakfast, Blueberry Blitz CrossFit Games, National Blueberry Festival Parade, Adult Blueberry Pie Eating Contest and so much more. If you are looking for a great weekend getaway, head to South Haven and enjoy the best Southwest Michigan has to offer. Make sure to tell them that Women’s LifeStyle Magazine of Southwest Michigan sent you. Don’t forget to enjoy the fabulous South Haven sunsets!
