Comedy troupe Asperger’s Are Us, the stars of the hit Netflix documentary by the same name and an HBO docuseries, will be taking the stage at Crawlspace Comedy Theatre on May 30, 2019. They will share their absurdist sketches, ripe with hilarious wordplay and unexpected breaking of social conventions. They are the first comedy troupe composed of people with Asperger’s Syndrome. However, they want you to laugh at their work, not their condition.
The four members of the troupe are on an international tour and are stopping in Kalamazoo for one night only. They’ll be taking the stage at the Crawlspace Comedy Theatre, which is in the historic First Baptist Church building downtown Kalamazoo, 315 W. Michigan Ave, Kalamazoo, MI 49007. The venue is a perfect fit for comedy performance because of its easy accessibility, cash bar, and a stage custom built for comedy. Asperger’s Are Us will bring their comedy to the intimate setting to bring laughs and possibly shatter assumptions of what people with Asperger’s are all about.
The New York Times said, “Instead of focusing on the condition, the four men who make up the troupe perform skits and monologues that reflect their thoughts, perspectives and offbeat sensibilities, often characterized by deadpan and absurd humor… the guys are not looking for sympathy laughs or polite applause. Their show is not an autism awareness campaign, they say. They want people to laugh simply because they’re funny.”
The show will start at 8 pm, with doors opening at 7 pm. Beer & wine will be available for purchase before and during the show. Tickets are $15. For tickets and more information, https://aspergersareus.eventbrite.com.
