BEST PIECE OF ADVICE: It’s okay to be nervous and to ask for help. It will help you be the best, most confident, relaxed parent for your baby.
Parenting, as they say, is not for the weak of heart. It has always been one of the most challenging (and most rewarding) jobs a human being can undertake. In the age of social media, it seems that the expectations are higher than ever. New parents are thrown into the deep end, sleep-deprived and insecure, only to find glossy images on Instagram and Facebook that tell them that life with a newborn should be an unending parade of sweet snuggles in a home that is neat and tidy.
Lisa Garnett knows better. Not only is she the mother of three grown children, she is an experienced Professional Nanny and Newborn Care Specialist. She currently works full-time as a nanny for an infant, as well as doing overnight newborn care. Her job is to help parents navigate the challenges facing families these days.
“As a new parent, your whole world is turned upside down. Things rarely go exactly as planned. I think society expects you to be perfect, relaxed and comfortable from the time you find you’re pregnant. These things are unrealistic.”
Lisa says that she knew from a young age that she wanted to work with kids and babies. She started babysitting in the summers at the tender age of 11 and moved on to working in daycare centers during High School. When she decided that she preferred to work in more intimate, one-on-one environments, she headed to Denver to attend he Nanny School.
A member of the National Academies of Nannies and a graduate of the Newborn Care Solutions Advanced course, Lisa is trained in the Sleepwonders program. She uses this holistic method to help her clients with pediatric sleep conditioning and training, working closely with families to develop a sleep strategy that works well for the whole family. This brings much-needed rest and order to families during what can be a chaotic and overwhelming time in their lives.
Lisa values being able to work with her families to help raise their children and is inspired daily by the babies themselves. They grow and develop so quickly, learning to communicate with others and make sense of the world around them. She feels an incredible sense of awe at the way these little ones love deeply and completely. We would all do well to follow their example.
Lisa loves to spend her free time in creative pursuits. When she’s not taking care of her small charges, she loves to spend time crafting and scrapbooking. She also enjoys traveling and prides herself on her ability to plan incredible vacations. Her perfect day, in fact, involves waking up on a cruise ship before heading off to explore an island she’s never visited before.
Erica Shier is a married mother of four who loves reading, scrapbooking & thrift stores. When she’s not driving her small pack of children around, she spends her time volunteering, writing & trying to keep on top of the laundry.
