There are few nights in a teenager’s life that can compare with the glitz and glamour of Prom night. Sparkling lights, a date on her arm (or a posse of girls at her side) and an evening spent dancing the night away are all im- portant parts of this quintessential American rite of passage. We all know, however, that it’s finding that perfect dress that dominates the thoughts and dreams of young ladies in the months leading up to the big night. For many, however, spending hundreds of dollars on a fabulous frock is simply not in the cards.
Believing that no young woman should miss such an important High School tradition, Memories Bridal partnered with The Junior League of Kalamazoo in 2006 to launch The Cinderella Project. They spend the year collecting donated dresses, shoes and accessories and make them available free of charge to area students who otherwise might not be able to afford to buy what they need for Prom night. Every year since then, the Cinderella Project has given away hundreds of dresses, ensuring that personal or financial hardships don’t rob girls of a magical evening.
The Cinderella Project is made possible by the generosity of the local community. Every year people donate their gently-used special occasion apparel and accessories, doing their part to ensure that all the young ladies of the Kalamazoo area are given the opportunity to enjoy Prom. Founder Adrienne Wissner is profoundly grateful for the support the event continues to receive from the community. She wants to be sure that every girl finds the dress of her dreams and notes that the Cinderella Project especially needs plus-size donations to ensure that they have something to offer every girl, regardless of body type.
The Cinderella Project operates on the honor system, which means that interested students don’t need to bring proof of financial hardship. All they need is a valid school id and the stamina needed for the hunt for their perfect dress.
Donations are accepted year-round at Memories Bridal, 203 E. Michigan Ave, Kalamazoo, MI 49007. For more information on the Cinderella Project of Kalamazoo, visit their website, dresslikeyou.com/prom-dresses/cinderella-project/
