Finishing Your Look: Accessorizing Professionally

You know it’s important to invest in a business wardrobe, but clothing is only one part of your overall professional image. You also need to pay attention to accessories and other finishing steps. Here are five tips to ensure that your accessories work for you.

Jewelry finishes your look. Without jewelry you look underdressed (and underpaid!). Invest in classic jewelry that will stand the test of time, and each year add one or two more pieces. Consider starting your collection with a well-appointed watch and a pair of earrings that frame your face.

Classic shoes, as well as, bags or briefcases are good investments. Choose suede or leather (or manmade quality versions) in neutral colors for your bags and shoes and choose classic styles rather than the latest trends.

Take the time to do a “test run” on any new accessory or garment you add to your business wardrobe. Wear it first to meet a friend for lunch before you wear it to work. You don’t want to be surprised by an earring that keeps falling off or a necklace that catches your hair.

Take a good look at yourself in the mirror before you leave each morning. Are your shoes clean and polished? Are your accessories simple and in balance with your clothing, leaving your face the focal point?

While all shoes make noise, notice if yours are unusually loud. This can distract those around you and will make you uncomfortable. The same goes for jewelry. You don’t want noisy bracelets creating distraction.

Accessories are a vital part of an effective professional wardrobe. Whatever your professional role, follow these ideas to feel confident and look fantastic.
