I.M.P.A.C.T. Program Launches Spring Schedule for Free Music Classes

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The Music Center is pleased to announce the launching of the 2019 Spring I.M.P.A.C.T. program schedule. I.M.P.A.C.T., an acronym for Inner-city Music Proving Arts Can Teach is a free afterschool program offering beginning drumming and piano lessons and the popular Sojourner Truth Choir. For more information or to sign up for free classes or the Sojourner Truth Choir, contact The Music Center at 269-963-1911, ext. 2523. Sessions are starting this week but kids can join anytime.

The 45-minute drumming and piano classes are held at the Ann J. Kellogg elementary school on Tuesdays at 4:00, 4:50, and 5:30. The school is located at 306 Champion Street. Carolyn Ballard, I.M.P.A.C.T. director for over a decade, tells us, “Although the classes are held at the Ann J. Kellogg location, boys and girls in grades 2 through 5 from any school are eligible for the free program. Kids can sign up now to take advantage of this fun after school program.”

The Sojourner Truth Choir has been singing throughout the area since 2001 and has developed quite a following. So far this year, they have performed at various events and venues including Leila Arboretum, the Sojourner Truth celebration kickoff, at Harper Creek High School, and with the Battle Creek Community Chorus at their Fall Showcase concert. They also traveled to Tennessee performing in two venues while there. Executive Director of The Music Center, Susan Balbaugh, shares, “A big rainstorm hit us at the Leila Arboretum concert. It was an outright downpour but the kids just kept on singing. Even though they were under cover, I know they were getting wet but they did not miss a beat.”

Rehearsals are every Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:30 at The Music Center in the Davidson Building on the Kellogg Community College campus. Girls and boys ages 7 and up are eligible to participate.

The I.M.P.A.C.T. program is made possible through generous funding provided by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Battle Creek Community Foundation, Post Consumer Brands, and individual supporters.
