This September Kazoo Books is celebrating 30 YEARS of serving Kalamazoo as one of its premier independent booksellers. Clocking in at 4,000 square feet, the store is larger than it appears from the street and has 5 stories of books for ardent readers to explore. Kazoo Books is a blended-concept store, with brand-new selections sharing shelf space with pre-owned books in great condition. Don’t see what you’re looking for? Just say the word and the staff will find and order the book you desire…and have it in-store for you in record time.
Book clubs and other gatherings are welcome at Kazoo Books. Whether you’re with a small group of girlfriends, are part of a book club or are hosting a shower, the store offers a number of areas in which you can make yourself comfortable as discussion flows. Kazoo Books can accommodate groups up to 45 people and provides access to a full kitchen for food and beverage preparation.
Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Mystery and Thrillers
Kazoo Books prides itself on its massive selection of science fiction, fantasy, mystery and thriller reads. Whether you’re in search of the latest installment of your current favorite series or are interested in finding a vintage selection in your favorite genre, you’re likely to find it here. Pull up a comfortable chair in front of the electric fireplace & enjoy a trip to another world.
The Great American Read
Sponsored by PBS and continuing through October 18, The Great American Read encourages people to vote online and on social media for their favorite from a list of 100 books (classics and best-sellers alike). America’s favorite read will be announced on PBS in October. Inspired by the list? Kazoo Books is the perfect place to pick up a copy of one you haven’t read yet…or maybe an old favorite you’d like to revisit.
Kazoo Books is a passionate supporter of local authors, making sure to keep the shelves stocked with reads written by the Michigan authors you love. Pictured are: The Recipe Box by Viola Shipman, The Amber Beads by Judith Rypma, Once upon a River by Bonnie Jo Campbell and Art Speaks: Paintings and Poetry by Mary Hatch and Elizabeth Kerlikowske.
Keeping up with the Times
Even with the emergence of e-readers and digital platforms, Gloria remains committed to the idea that people really do prefer the experience of paper books and brick and mortar stores. Kazoo Books works very hard to keep track of trends and preferences and adjusts accordingly to meet its customers’ needs. Gloria is not afraid to innovate and has developed an online business. She’s also involved in distribution and is antiquarian trained. Author and photographer Bill Kline advertises and distributes his series of four picture books through Kazoo Books. Pick up one of his beautiful books (or the whole set) for someone you love…or yourself!
Gloria and her team are deeply committed to the Greater Kalamazoo area and invest in it in myriad ways. Gloria supports local schools by helping with book selections and arranging author signings when possible. She also employs two High School students as paid interns, training them in all aspects of the business. Her goal is that, when they leave, they have comprehensive knowledge about what goes into running a successful retail business, from customer service and setting up attractive displays to how to effectively use the computer.
Erica Shier is a married mother of four who loves reading, scrapbooking & thrift stores. When she’s not driving her small pack of children around, she spends her time volunteering, writing & trying to keep on top of the laundry.
