The Portage location for MacKenzies’ Café & Bakery will close on October 1. After summer-long road construction on South Westnedge in Portage, instore analysis was conducted, and local owners John and Mary MacKenzie concluded that not renewing their lease at the Portage location at 7083 South Westnedge is the best solution for maintaining overall excellence in product and service at the remaining two locations.
“We didn’t come to this decision lightly,” John MacKenzie explains. “We provide a fresh, local alternative, offering the best breads, cakes, sweets and other bakery goods. We will still have the same great products at our other two locations. And Portage customers will continue to find our fresh-baked breads at Harding’s Market on South Westnedge.”
To better serve customers throughout the area, the locations on Harrison Street in Downtown Kalamazoo and in the Westwood Plaza on West Main Street are slated for updates, including a freshening of the dining areas. “Redirecting our focus to these two locations will enable us to maximize premium service,” Mary says. “We’re excited to give our dining areas at both stores a new updated look.” Serving the area since 1980, MacKenzies’ Café & Bakery continues to provide fresh-baked goods— including a wide variety of breads, cakes, sweets, sandwiches, salads, coffees and much more. MacKenzies also offers premium custom-made cakes for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, holidays and all occasions.
Portage store hours are 8am to 2pm, Monday-Saturday through September 29. Hours for the Downtown Kalamazoo and West Main locations are 6am to 6pm, Monday-Friday and 6am to 3pm on Saturdays.
